A total of 30 101 new passenger vehicles were sold during the month, marking a significant 16.9% increase compared to the 25 751 units sold in April 2024. This performance came despite fewer selling days due to public holidays. Passenger car sales made up the bulk of the month’s total new vehicle sales (42 401 units), with 8.9% of passenger cars sold to the rental industry. The segment’s strong showing continued the positive momentum seen in the first quarter of the year.

Falling inflation, down to 2.7% year-on-year in March, and the government’s reversal of a proposed VAT hike also helped sustain consumer confidence, preserving household spending power at a crucial time. Looking ahead, naamsa sees passenger vehicle sales as an area of opportunity despite concerns about rising global tariffs, particularly the US-imposed Section 232 duties that threaten South Africa’s vehicle exports. These global developments could impact future local pricing and investment, but for now, the local passenger car market remains resilient.
