BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has entered the Romanian passenger car market, continuing to expand its footprint in Europe.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker officially entered Romania on May 8 with the launch of the electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) Sealion 07 EV, the all-electric sedan Seal, the hybrid SUV Song Plus DM-i, and the electric SUV Yuan UP, according to an announcement today.
The Sealion 07 has been renamed locally as the Sealion 7, the Song Plus DM-i as the Seal U DM-i, and the Yuan UP as the Atto 2.
BYD’s mission is to make its sustainable technologies more accessible to a wider range of users, and each new market in Europe is crucial for the company, said Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president.
The company has opened its first store in Bucharest, the Romanian capital, in partnership with Tiriac Auto and DAB Auto.
By the end of 2025, BYD is expected to open more than 30 sales outlets in Romania, the company said.
BYD ceased production and sales of cars powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to focus on the production of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The company sold 380,089 NEVs in April, up 21.34 percent year-on-year and up 0.71 percent from March, according to data it released earlier this month.
This included 372,615 passenger NEVs and 7,474 commercial NEVs.

In the past month, BYD expanded into more European markets.
On April 16, BYD said it entered the Czech and Slovak car markets, where it launched the Sealion 07 EV and Song Plus DM-i.
On April 28, the company said it entered the Croatian passenger car market, launching the Seal, Song Plus EV, Song Plus DM-i and Sealion 07 EV there.
BYD entered the UK passenger car market in March 2023.
