Jim Farley said there was more in it after the Mustang GTD became the first American-built car to lap the famed Green Hell in less than 7 minutes, and he wasn’t wrong! The full-fat V8-powered kilometre oblivious model managed a whopping 6:52 lap!

The Ford Mustang GTD has done it again by devouring the 20.832 km (or 12.9 miles in its native tongue) in record time. Already crowned the quickest American production car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the track-focused pony car has returned to the “Green Hell” and smashed its own lap time, clocking a staggering 6 minutes, 52.072 seconds.

That’s a full five seconds quicker than its previous benchmark lap of 6:57, set last December. To put that in context: the GTD now laps the ’Ring faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari 296 GTB, Lamborghini Aventador SV, and even the 911 GT3 in its own home!
In our first attempt at the @Nuerburgring, Mustang GTD became the first American production car to complete a sub-7-min lap. We knew there was more in it! The Mustang GTD has officially set a new time of 6:52.072 – fourth fastest in class! Congrats @MuellerDirk & the whole team! pic.twitter.com/g1iumKrXEK

5 Seconds is a significant chunk of time and the Ford team claims they found it by prepping the Nürburgring assault car with updated powertrain calibration, a stiffer chassis, revised ABS and traction control systems, and refined aerodynamics. Of course, this isn’t an average Mustang. The GTD churns 600 kW through a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and a carbon fibre torque tube. The suspension is motorsport grade with semi-active Multimatic spool-valve dampers with pushrod and rocker arm architecture.

Ford hasn’t yet released full onboard footage of the record-smashing lap, but expect a cinematic YouTube upload to land soon. For now, they’ve shared a selection of photos showing the GTD in full flight. Unfortunately, the Mustang GTD is a limited-run halo car with a hefty price tag and left-hand-drive configuration only — so local allocation remains unlikely. But as a symbol of what Ford’s performance division can do when unshackled, it’s nothing short of thunderous.
