Formerly a rugged Scandinavian wagon that chanelled the spirit of the revered and boxy 850, Volvo has now announced that it will be bringing back the XC70 badge but with an electrified twist.

That is right, Swedish automaker Volvo is set to revive its XC70 nameplate, imbuing the model with a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. The catch here is that it is being tailored for the Chinese market. This means that it is unlikely to make a return in the local market with the model last available a decade ago. Speaking of which, the previous model was a rugged, lifted estate based on the V70, which was lauded for its all-wheel-drive capability and practical design.

In South Africa, the XC70 was offered with a 2.4-litre D5 diesel engine, which was good for 158 kW and 440 N.m. This was sent to each corner via a 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. Aside from its ride height, the additional protective body cladding further alluded to a model that was capable of venturing off the beaten path once it had concluded the school and grocery runs.

The new moniker continues the name, but as a complete evolution from what was once familiar in Mzansi. It is built on Volvo’s Scalable Modular Architecture and features a plug-in hybrid powertrain and SUV stature. While specific technical details are yet to be disclosed, the teaser images reveal the front ensconed in Thor’s Hammer LED headlights while the interior is touted to continue the firm’s minimalist and modern traditions.

Currently, Volvo has not confirmed whether the new XC70 will be available in markets outside China, and if it is, it could only be for right-hand drive markets. Locally, Volvo’s focus has been on electrification, with models like the XC40 Recharge and the forthcoming EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs. This is because Volvo aims to transition into a completely electric lineup by 2030.
